The Value of Certifications

Written by Penn Contractors | Nov 8, 2024 6:10:53 PM

State and local business licenses ensure a contractor meets the minimum standard for the construction industry. Experienced, professional contractors go beyond the minimum, pursuing additional certifications that demonstrate the company's proficiency and expertise with specific products and construction techniques. These are important for training, continuing education and ensuring that homeowners get the best possible value from their remodeling project.

You should always confirm a contractor is licensed and insured for the work you are considering. Homeowners who want a great remodeling experience also review certifications.

Manufacturer certifications: There is a significant benefit to homeowners when a contractor uses products from manufacturers that provide education and certifications. In addition to employees receiving training on proper installation, the manufacturer will often provide an enhanced warranty. That is because the products will be installed by a certified team to the manufacturer’s standards.

Penn is a Pella Certified Contractor, a certification held by less than five percent of contractors nationwide. Our employees receive continuous education from Pella, and are true window and door experts.

Association certifications: Organizations like the National Association of Home Builders exist to bring contractors together to craft a standard of service and quality, and also to provide resources about new products and the future of building. Penn Contractors has earned certifications from NABH in multiple specialties, including aging-in-place and green building products. These certifications guarantee that our employees are experts in code requirements and safety standards, and that Penn customers receive the highest possible attention to detail, based on detailed knowledge and rigorous standards.

For example, in this project, our clients wanted to remain safe and comfortable in their daily lives as they age in their forever home. Our team took on the challenge, resulting in a design that is both elegant and highly accessible. A new first-floor primary suite creates easy access without the need for stairs. The primary bathroom includes a walk-in shower with stylish gold grab bars that match the room’s decor, low door thresholds to remove trip hazards, a sliding hand shower attachment with a six-foot hose, and a built-in bench seat. The updated, open living area is easy to navigate. At the same time, comfortable seating with armrests ensures the home is functional and beautiful as the couple continues to enjoy the home they love in the coming years.

As Certified Green Professionals, we are committed to using green building products and improved insulation to improve the energy efficiency of client homes, without increasing project costs.

Manufacturer and association certifications are not easy to acquire, and as a result, they often highlight the difference between general contractors and professional craftsmen. Penn has made and continues to make significant investments in ongoing education in order to deliver the highest possible quality for our clients.
